Have A Healthier Barbecue

Swimmer Boy Eating CornHappy Memorial Day! The pools are open now, and chances are you’re celebrating a summer cook-off with a barbecue. So here’s how to have a healthier day:

-Keep track of food recalls. There’s already been a ground beef recall, so be sure to check what you’ve got before through burgers on the grill. Fruit is another common source of food poisoning in the summer—but you can avoid that by chopping and preparing it yourself.

-Set the grill up so the smoke will ventilate away from the cook and the party. (And follow all safety tips for your particular grill).

-Grill low and slow. Fast, hot temperatures can turn things carcinogenic (albeit in a delicious, delicious way).

-Make sure all your meat hits at least 160 degrees.

-Practice food safety—clean surfaces that touch raw meat, wash your hands often, and don’t let food sit out for more than a couple of hours. Make sure that you have enough sterno, ice, and lids/covers.

-Make sure you drink plenty of water to avoid getting dehydrated. Alcohol and caffeine will dehydrate you, so alternate them with a glass of water.

After Eating:

-You don’t actually have to wait an hour before getting in the pool, but sitting up and taking some time to digest isn’t bad for you.

-Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen—and wait for it to dry before getting in the pool. Check out our list of natural sunscreens if you are worried about chemical content.

-As the sun sets, be sure to take precautions against mosquitoes. Mosquito borne illnesses have been increasing the last few years.
