Noticed The Recent Attacks Against Colloidal Silver And Other Natural Health Supplements?

August 6, 2010

When Toyota had their recall not so long ago, did you decide all cars were dangerous and give up driving? No, because you have the ability to discern between brands, and even before the recall you were probably aware of consumer complaints against the brakes in those cars affected.

It’s the same with every other product. Even among those who make “natural” supplements, there are those not living up to the claims. A little Googling usually reveals complaints by other users, or, on the flip side, crazy happy testimonials. It is entirely possible to discern between good sources and bad, no matter the products.

Natural Vitamin Supplements

Why is this important? Recently, Yahoo released a consumer report attacking natural health supplements and calling for more regulation (side note: the industry is already heavily regulated, and regulations don’t always live up to the goal of protecting consumers as much as they make it hard–expensive–for smaller businesses).

Everyday, more food, toiletries (toothpaste, for example), and other things like pet food, children’s toys, etc. come into the country then there is possible manpower to regulate and check–less than 2% is actually confirmed to be what it says, and to be contaminant free. As a consequence, you may remember any number of awful things that have happened in the past few years causing illness or death: pet food poisonings, salmonella outbreaks, contaminated beef

And yet, you never hear about anyone dying from taking supplements. In fact, there haven’t been any deaths in recent years. Although, as discussed above, some companies are less scrupulous then others, most small companies selling natural supplements are what they say–they, as already required by regulation, check their ingredients to confirm what they are and gauge quality.

The article claims that many health supplements are “contaminated with…pesticides or prescription drugs”. First, our world has reached a point where it’s nearly impossible to avoid any contamination of pesticides, although most natural health advocates do their best to avoid sources that have been contaminated. Even if your apples were organically grown, who knows what was next to them, and what toxins may have previously seeped into the ground. A magazine that promotes natural health once wrote that anything you intend to eat should be grown at least 20 feet away from any paved road because of the toxins it causes to seep into soil (not to mention car exhaust). Have you ever driven by/flown over farming land? Driven around wine country? No one seems to follow this advice, and so one can conclude that, no matter the farming practices, perfection is not exactly achieved.

Second, most of your drinking water is already contaminated with prescription drugs. It made news a few years ago–a study found that, especially in heavily populated areas like the coasts–tap water was full of prescription drugs that weren’t properly filtered out; hormones (from birth control) and anti-depressants were the biggest offenders.

The article also states that “China, which has repeatedly been caught exporting contaminated products, is a major supplier of raw supplement ingredients. The FDA has yet to inspect a single factory there.” Again, health supplements manufacturers are required to verify their ingredients, and this often involves checking the quality, and again, like with all products, quality will vary by brand.

The thing to realize is that those companies whose mission is natural health are doing their best to avoid these contaminants, spending money on purified water, getting things made without preservatives, fillers, or other synthetic add-ins that make production easier, that bigger companies tend to use.

When it comes to colloidal silver, the only side effect that is thrown out to depict colloidal silver as dangerous is argyria, a condition where large silver particles collect in the skin and give it a blueish sheen (this is something that can now be removed with lasers, although it’s expensive). Argyria does not adversely affect one’s health, much less is it life-threatening. Knowing that, it’s important to add that it’s incredibly rare. Very few cases are reported yearly, and most of them can be tied to a single product/manufacturer (again, consumers need to be discerning).

Silver has been used historically as a natural antibiotic–did the medical industry stop using it because it’s dangerous? No. Mostly, it’s because it’s more expensive in certain uses than alternatives, and the invention of antibiotics was a big breakthrough. What’s more, silver is still used (and finding rebirth among medical practitioners) in cases where antibiotics are becoming resistant, as with medical devices (like catheters, heart valves…) inserted into the body. Traditional (and continued) uses of silver involves the treatment of burns.

Of course, you need to practice common sense. If you eat large chunks of silver, that would probably make you sick. Or choke. But choking on something isn’t the fault of the thing, it’s usually the fault of the user. Get the picture?

When choosing health products, do a little research. Call the company. Are you speaking to someone knowledgeable? Sincere? Can they answer your questions? There are more things for sale around the world than ever before in history. Consumers have to be their own last line of defense, weeding out crooks, and supporting companies that are honest.

What are your thoughts and experiences with colloidal silver?

Inspiring thought of how to select your true medicine. We should filter all of them advertising their products. Some are just after the commission and not for the satisfaction of customer.

I’ve been using Colloidal Silver for many years and have been very happy with it. My only worry is that the the big drug corporation will take over the market and it’s use and sale of it will be retricted or stopped. There is no reason for the drug companies to find a cure for anything. It’s a 100 billion market, so why would you cure any health problem. When was the last time you heard of health problem being cured.

@Pat D
I haven’t had a chance to see “Food, Inc.” yet, but I am familiar with much of what you mention.

“The Cove” is also a very good movie (full disclosure: I know some of the people involved with its production).

Again, thank you all for your inspiring stories.

Colloidal silver has saved my life. Those with argyria have simply failed to do any research before ingesting silver products. // Corporate America is running (and ruining) our lives. They have monopolized the farms and food industry and are looking to do the same with supplements. These days, most people have no idea what they are putting into their mouths. If you’re glad you don’t live in a third-world country, take a good look at food processing here in the good ol’ USA. Everyone should see the film “Food, Inc.” It is a real eye-opener, and contains valuable information everyone needs to know about where their food comes from and the mega-corporations that are telling you what to eat. (For instance, did you know that many of the higher-ups in the FDA are former executives for huge nationwide corporations which have monopolized the food industry? Nothing like keeping the fox in the henhouse!) Big corporations intend to do the same thing with the supplements that are keeping us healthy. Drug manufacturers can’t stand the fact that they are losing money to natural products that actually work, without the nasty side effects. They can’t seem to get control of all the natural supplement companies, so the only other alternative is to discredit them and their products, send them out of business, and then eventually take over production at a much higher cost to the consumer. Another big corporation monopoly. Please see “Food, Inc.” I also suggest you see “The Cove”, all about what the Japanese fishing industry is doing to their dolphins and their unknowing consumers. (For one thing, they are forcing school children to eat mercury-laden dolphin meat every day.) Hey — it could happen here.

I have been an avid user of Colloidal Silver for years. As a former epidemiologist and current holistic and spiritual health educator and healer, I refer people to the product all the time. I have maintained my strong immune system, rid myself of topical irritants and know apply or ingesting this wonderful product is not going to hurt me, cause my skin to turn blue or intoxicate me in any manner. The reports out there are more irriating for controversy than taking the product.
Growing up in the 60s where everything was pharmaceutical, once I cleansed my body and got off the precriptions and went more natural, my body began its own healing as God meant us to live.
If we get too healthy, the big businesses will go under. God forbid we get healthy.
I am totally in favor of the colloids.

Thank you all for you input. It is good to hear how a product really helps.

I did read the unclean situation with China’s products and that they were never regulated or checked by the U.S. as to actually being the pure products they claim. Then, a 27 yr. old man taking a energy supplement for his workouts almost died from liver failure by taking this particular product. This particular article also stated many herbals and other ingredients that did not do what they said and were harmful. Coloidal Silver was listed as one product not conducive to liver health and recommedation not to take it. And may turn you blue.

They did the same thing to bob Barefoot on his Coral Calcium. Anything that helps us and takes money from the drug companies-they want to degrade and abolish. Anything that they can not control and make money on has to go. This country is going to part. The people do not matter. They do not even care what they feed the children-yet make out like they care so much about the unborn. They use God to defend murder and mayhem- what ever happened to the teachings of Jesus. Are we God like or Evil in sheep’s clothes? People think working three jobs is patriotic and suffering is our due. Man our we brainwashed as a whole. Corporate sits back and sucks us dry. If that is the American way-it sucketh!

The first colloidal silver I tried was for strep throat. I used my antibiotics as prescribed and two days after the last dose the infection had returned. I tried the silver and throat was better in a few days. Now at the first sign I use a few sprays and haven’t hadn’t a bad sore throat since.

More recently I used it for a pretty bad infection in my leg. It has taken some time to heal. But my whole leg was swollen from knee to ankle. I felt feverish and dizzy with really bad headaches. Within a few hours the fever, headache and dizziness were gone. Within a day the swelling had started to go down. The would drained for about a week. And it has taken about a month for the tissue to regrow. I almost went to the hospital but infection is one of the leading causes of death in hospitals. I’m glad now I didn’t from all the stories I’ve heard about ongoing skin infections that the doctors can’t seem to cure.

My grandmother started taking it after my luck. Within a week the pain in her bladder was a fraction of what it had been. Something she has seen the doctors about for years.

Just like most products on the market, common sense needs to be used.

I have used C-silver for years….I use primarily for the it for allergy or infection or itching….last time I went to ear doctor (year ago) he said my ears were perfectly clear with no wax buildup like before. Also have used in eyes, mouth and nose over the years and it has always helped if not solved the problem…..high concentration is preferable but only a little is required….in the ears with a cue tip for example….

We have been using colloidal silver to stay healthy for years. And what is the result of that? We rarely ever have an illness. We have been using colloidal silver for treatment of burns and abrasions, etc. for years. And what is the result of that? Any wounds heal amazing quick without antibiotics. So I say, what IS the problem? Am I a free American who has a brain to make decisions for what is best for me and my family? Of course! Then I strongly suggest that people stay out of my way and my life, and let ME choose what is best.

My husband was diagnosed with Hep C several years ago. After doing some research and finding the side effects of those inferene shots, I decided he wasn’t taking them. I found Mesosilver when his viral loads were in the millions. After using Mesosilver for a few months his Hep C was almost non-detectable and he has only had two episodes since then. Now you tell me, take the shots that could cause mental issues or take Mesosilver that helps your body fight the Hep C virus with no side effects? Seems like a no brainer to me.

I have found Colloidal Silver helpful in fighting a fungus initiated by a prescribed overdosage of predizone (know sp not quite correct) for a skin allergy to tea tree oil. The “treatment” produced a worse allergy that it has taken me 10 on-going years to overcome. Colloidal silver was among the self-medications I found helpful. I have little faith in most physicians and the hype sold to them by the pharmaceutical companies.

I quit believing Consumer Reports after experiencing and having friends and relatives share the negative results of many of their recommendations.

Ruth Claus August 10, 2010 at 7:15 am

I have used your Colloidal Silver for many years. I have had far less allergy symptoms and very few colds and viruses. If I do get something it is much milder
than others experience in my office.
As with anything else in mainstream media these days, there is NO checking of facts.
I will continue to take my 1 tsp a day!

Consumer Reports; Where are the Bodies and Where are the “Blue People”?

This month’s article from Consumer Reports displays an article on what they call the ‘Dirty Dozen’ 12 nutritional supplements including Colloidal Silver. In the article, CR says colloidal silver “has a possible risk of: Bluish skin, mucous membrane discoloration, neurological problems, kidney damage”. Nowhere do they offer any proof. None.

If colloidal silver is a health hazard, where are the bodies? Where are the blue people? Think about it; for simplicity, let’s say that there a 300 million people in the USA. Arguably, there are 10 million people who take Colloidal Silver daily. In your entire lifetime, how many people have you met who are blue? Probably none.

How many people have died using Colloidal Silver? None. Here is proof;

Orthomolecular Medicine News Service, January 19, 2010

(OMNS, January 19, 2010) “There was not even one death caused by a dietary supplement in 2008, according to the most recent information collected by the U.S. National Poison Data System.”

“The new 174-page annual report of the American Association of Poison Control Centers, published in the journal Clinical Toxicology, shows zero deaths from multiple vitamins; zero deaths from any of the B vitamins; zero deaths from vitamins A, C, D, or E; and zero deaths from any other vitamin.”

“Additionally, there were no deaths whatsoever from any amino acid or herbal product. This means no deaths at all from blue cohosh, echinacea, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, kava kava, St. John’s wort, valerian, yohimbe, Asian medicines, ayurvedic medicines, or any other botanical. There were zero deaths from creatine, blue-green algae, glucosamine, chondroitin, melatonin, or any homeopathic remedies.”

“Furthermore, there were zero deaths in 2008 from any dietary mineral supplement. This means there were no fatalities from calcium, magnesium, chromium, zinc, colloidal silver, selenium, iron, or multimineral supplements. Two children died as a result of medical use of the antacid sodium bicarbonate. The other “Electrolyte and Mineral” category death was due to a man accidentally drinking sodium hydroxide, a highly toxic degreaser and drain-opener.”

“No man, woman or child died from nutritional supplements. Period.”

“61 poison centers provide coast-to-coast data for the U.S. National Poison Data System, which is then reviewed by 29 medical and clinical toxicologists. NPDS, the authors write, is “one of the few real-time national surveillance systems in existence, providing a model public health surveillance system for all types of exposures, public health event identification, resilience response and situational awareness tracking.”

So let’s see if the facts bear out. Pharmaceutical Drugs cause 106,000 DEATHS in 2008, while there were ZERO deaths from Nutritional Supplements. When the light shines on facts, the truth comes out. What is the real agenda of Consumer Reports? It is hard to say, but a prestigious publication like CR is seriously in danger of losing their credibility. Any aware consumer will want to know the facts and not depend upon a publication that merely makes accusations.

This article is poorly researched, unsupported and could possibly be the result of Big Pharma trying to sway consumers through a well-respected publication away from safe and effective dietary supplements towards toxic and deadly pharmaceutical drugs. Consumer Reports has certainly lost me as someone who believes what they say. Unbiased; you decide!
