Silica Mineral Supplement

July 9, 2009

Silica, the second most abundant element in the earth’s crust, is now finding its way into the dietary supplement industry in a big way. Silica, also known as silicon dioxide, is a compound made out of the two most abundant elements in the Earth’s crust, silicon and oxygen (SiO2). Silicon (26% of earth’s crust) has been shown to be essential to the health of many systems in the human body. In the human body, silicon is found in the connective tissues, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and blood vessels and it is thought that the mineral is essential for their integrity. Positive correlation has been identified between high levels of Silicon (silica) and high bone mass density, low levels of aluminum, lower levels of Alzheimer’s disease, shortened time for healing of burns, and lower incidence of atherosclerosis. Silicon has also been shown to perform an important role in connective tissue, especially in bone and cartilage. In 1972 silica was recognized an essential trace element in the human body.

Silica is present in many natural sources. Foods also containing silica include alfalfa sprouts, beets, brown rice, bell peppers, soybeans, leafy green vegetables, root vegetables, cooked dried beans and peas, and whole grain breads and cereals. Horsetail, Equisetum arvense, herb and extracts were the most concentrated sources of silica for dietary supplements until the advent of colloidal silica.

Colloidal silica is now available in a concentration of 600 ppm of pure silica in particles measuring 6 nanometers in diameter. A 1 tablespoon dosage will provide 9 milligrams of silica nanoparticles.
