What Is Colloidal Gold Good For? What Is Real and What Is Not

Gold nanoparticles do real work in modern medicine — there is almost certainly one in your bathroom cabinet right now. Colloidal gold as a supplement is a different proposition, and the claims made for it have drifted a long way from anything that has been demonstrated.

This page covers what colloidal gold actually is, where gold genuinely works in medicine and diagnostics, the one place gold was a real prescribed treatment, what the cognitive claims rest on, and what we will and won’t tell you about the product we sell.

What is colloidal gold?

Extremely small particles of metallic gold suspended in water. Not dissolved — gold does not dissolve in water — but held in suspension, small enough that they stay dispersed rather than settling out.

The first genuinely surprising thing about it is the colour. A colloidal gold suspension is not gold-coloured. It is ruby red, or purple, or occasionally blue — and which one depends on the particle size. This is a real optical effect called surface plasmon resonance: electrons at the particle surface oscillate in response to light, absorbing part of the spectrum, and the wavelength they absorb shifts as the particles get larger. Change the particle size and you change the colour.

Michael Faraday made and studied colloidal gold in 1857, and some of his original samples are still held at the Royal Institution in London — still red, more than 160 years later.

One correction while we are here, because a previous version of this page said it: colloidal gold does not come from clay or shale deposits. It is manufactured, by reducing a gold compound in solution or by electrical methods. The clay-and-shale description belongs to humic and fulvic mineral products, which are something else entirely.

Where do gold nanoparticles genuinely work?

This is the part that deserves more attention than it gets, because it is both true and checkable.

Every rapid test you have ever used. That coloured line on a home pregnancy test, or a rapid antigen test, is gold nanoparticles. The test strip carries gold particles coated with antibodies; when the target molecule is present, the particles are captured along a line, and enough of them gathered in one place is visible to the naked eye — red-pink, for exactly the plasmon-resonance reason above. Lateral flow testing is one of the most widely used diagnostic technologies on earth, and colloidal gold is what makes the result visible.

Electron microscopy. Immunogold labelling attaches gold particles to antibodies so specific proteins can be located in a cell image. Gold is used because it is dense, so it shows up sharply, and inert, so it doesn’t react with the sample.

Active research in targeted therapy. Gold nanoparticles are being investigated as drug-delivery vehicles, as radiosensitisers, and in photothermal therapy — where particles accumulate in a tumour and are heated with infrared light. Some of this has reached clinical trials. None of it has become standard treatment, and all of it involves engineered particles of specific size and surface chemistry delivered in controlled ways.

Notice what these have in common: gold’s usefulness comes from its physical properties — optical behaviour, density, inertness — and from precise engineering. That is a different kind of usefulness from a pharmacological effect after swallowing.

Was gold ever a real medicine?

Yes — genuinely, and this is the strongest historical claim gold has.

From the 1930s, injectable gold salts were a standard treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, a practice known as chrysotherapy. These were disease-modifying drugs: they slowed joint damage, not merely masked pain. An oral form, auranofin, was approved in the mid-1980s and remains approved today.

Gold has largely been displaced in rheumatology by methotrexate and the biologics, for two reasons: those work better, and gold carried real toxicity — kidney damage with protein in the urine, drops in blood cell counts, mouth ulcers and dermatitis, all requiring regular monitoring.

Now the necessary qualification, and it is the same one that applies to silver. Gold salts are not colloidal gold. A gold salt is a soluble compound in which gold is chemically bound and biologically active — that reactivity is exactly where both the therapeutic effect and the toxicity came from. Colloidal gold is suspended metallic gold, and metallic gold is chemically inert. That inertness is why gold does not tarnish, why it is used in dental work and implants, and why it is well tolerated.

It also cuts both ways. The same inertness that makes metallic gold safe to have in your body makes a strong pharmacological effect from it implausible. You cannot claim the therapeutic record of gold salts and the safety profile of inert metallic gold at the same time — they come from opposite chemical properties.

What about the focus and memory claims?

Colloidal gold is most often marketed for mental clarity, focus, memory and mood. We should be straight about the state of that evidence: there are no controlled clinical trials supporting it.

The cognitive claims trace back to a very small, uncontrolled study with a handful of participants, no placebo group and no blinding. A study of that design cannot separate a real effect from expectation, natural variation, or the simple fact that people who have just bought something tend to look for signs it is working. It has not been replicated in controlled conditions.

What is true is that a lot of people take colloidal gold and report feeling sharper, and they are not making that up — they are reporting their experience accurately. What nobody has shown is that the gold is the cause. That distinction is the entire difference between a testimonial and evidence, and we would rather name it than blur it.

If your goal is cognitive performance, the interventions with genuinely strong evidence are unexciting and free: adequate sleep, cardiovascular exercise, treating hearing loss, managing blood pressure, and not being chronically sleep-deprived. Nothing sold in a bottle competes with fixing sleep.

Is colloidal gold safe?

Metallic gold is among the more inert things you can put in your body, and colloidal gold is generally well tolerated. Three things are still worth knowing.

  • Gold allergy is more common than people expect. Gold is one of the more frequent positives in dermatological patch testing. If jewellery has ever irritated your skin, take that seriously before applying anything gold-containing topically.
  • Chrysiasis. Gold can cause a permanent blue-grey discolouration of skin, directly analogous to argyria from silver. It is documented mainly with injected gold salts at therapeutic doses over long periods, not with supplement use — but it is the reason “gold is inert, therefore unlimited amounts are fine” is not a safe conclusion.
  • Long-term data is thin. There is far less research on chronic ingestion of gold nanoparticles than most marketing implies. Absence of reported harm is not the same as demonstrated long-term safety.

The claim traces to a very small uncontrolled study with no placebo group and no blinding, which cannot distinguish a real effect from expectation or normal variation, and it has not been replicated. Many people report feeling sharper while taking it; that is a genuine report, but it is not evidence that the gold caused it.

Is colloidal gold the same as the gold used to treat arthritis?

No. Rheumatoid arthritis was treated with injectable and later oral gold salts — soluble compounds in which gold is chemically bound and biologically active. That reactivity produced both the therapeutic effect and the toxicity that led to gold being largely replaced by methotrexate and biologics. Colloidal gold is suspended metallic gold, which is chemically inert. The two have opposite chemical behaviour, and evidence for one does not transfer to the other.

Can colloidal gold turn your skin grey?

Gold can cause chrysiasis, a permanent blue-grey skin discolouration analogous to silver-induced argyria. It is documented mainly in patients given injected gold salts at therapeutic doses over long periods, rather than from supplement use. It is the main reason not to treat gold’s inertness as a licence for unlimited intake.

Can you take colloidal gold and colloidal silver together?

There is no known interaction between them, and many people who take both simply take them at different times of day. Worth noting separately: silver can reduce the absorption of tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics and of levothyroxine, so if you take prescription medication, space them apart and check with your pharmacist.
