It’s not just a regular mosquito season. This summer, the mosquitoes that spread tropical illnesses like Zika, Dengue, and Yellow Fever spread across the US South and multiplied. While there have only been a handful of cases this year, travel between Zika infected areas and the US, plus the prevalence of the mosquito, is a recipe for a huge outbreak.
What’s hard about Zika is how successful the mosquito that carries it is. Aedes aegypti lives under your bed, survives almost no water, and can quickly spread disease.It hates most bug sprays, air conditioning, and cold weather. The warm winter has allowed them to push into new territory in the US, putting more people at risk of tropical illness.
