3 Things You Didn’t Realize Were Making You Depressed

April 22, 2014

Sad FaceThe sun is shining, but you’re a glowering or moping mess. You exercise, eat right, but it’s not doing the trick. You’re not as happy as you could be.

Don’t settle yet—there may still be a natural, easy solution to help pick your mode up, like fixing one of these three problems:

-Your blood sugar is low. Whether you’re working too much, dieting too hard, or skipping meals, low blood sugar can tank your mood, your view of the world, and even your energy, leaving you mentally and physically low. Schedule time to sit down and plan out meals and prep some easy snacks (peel and cut veggies, or make some whole grain snacks).

-You eat too much processed sugar. If you skip meals, it might be a tempting pick me up. Or maybe you eat healthy, but it’s your vice. While it’s an okay sometimes treat, processed sugar can cause spikes and dips in blood sugar (see above) and can lead to chronic inflammation that tanks your mood. Cut back on sugar, and if you aren’t already eating healthy replace it with fruits and veggies.

-You don’t move enough. You may or may not exercise—but I’m talking about really using your body: stretching it, resting it, and exercising all of it. Leaving a muscle group to tense up, or not get exercised as much might cause discomfort that builds up over time (and becomes a thorn in the lion’s paw situation—big reaction to a small fix). So stretch, move, and take a few seconds to close your eyes and check in from your toes to the top of your head.
