There’s a saying I love, because it applies to probably half the people I talk to who think they’re depressed: before you diagnose yourself with depression, make sure you aren’t surrounded by jerks. And the thought extends to: make sure you aren’t just having an appropriate reaction to your circumstances! Obviously stress over money or relationships may lead to depression if you let it occupy your head space long enough, but even positive things like moving, a new diet, or a new marriage take their toll, especially when life happens all at once!
If you need to address your circumstances, start by writing out the problems. Then add a plan of action, or inaction, if something is out of your control. Then relax, knowing you have a plan to follow.
Next, look at your environment. It’s winter, are you getting enough vitamin D? Maybe your dirt is weighing you down—too much sugar and not enough fruits, veggies, and lean meats will make you foggy, lethargic, and even sad feeling. Your body naturally craves sugar, fat, and salt, so it doesn’t take much to find yourself in a downward spiral. But a few days of eating healthy, or a few weeks of just healthy lunches and you’ll switch to naturally craving healthy foods. A daily multivitamin can help you get started on the track to good nutrition!
Exercise has also been shown to improve your mood—you’ll sleep better, your body will feel better, and endorphins will have you feeling super happy.
